Snake mites are one of the most stressful problems a keeper can face. Chemical sprays, powders, and “home remedies” can harm your snake and often fail to wipe mites out completely. Predatory snake mites offer a safer, biological control option. This guide explains how they work, how to use them, and how to tell if they’re doing their job.
The Biological Science: Know Your Mites
Effective control starts with understanding both the pest and the predator.
The Pest: Snake Mite (Ophionyssus natricis)

The common snake mite, Ophionyssus natricis, is a blood-feeding parasite that targets reptiles, especially snakes. At typical reptile room temperatures (75–85°F / 24–29°C), it completes its life cycle in about 13–19 days. The stages are: egg → larva (non-feeding) → protonymph (blood-feeding) → deutonymph (non-feeding) → adult (blood-feeding).
Adults and protonymphs hide under the scales and around the eyes to feed. Once engorged, females drop off the host and lay 60–80 eggs in dark, humid crevices of the enclosure. Heavy infestations can cause anemia, stress, poor sheds, and can transmit serious diseases such as Inclusion Body Disease (IBD).
The Predatory Mites: Biological Control Agents
Two main predatory mite species are used for safe, non-toxic control of snake mites. Each has its strengths and ideal use cases.
1. Stratiolaelaps scimitus (formerly Hypoaspis miles)

This is a soil-dwelling predator that lives in the substrate. It primarily eats larvae, protonymphs, and adult mites that move through the bedding. Because it cannot climb smooth surfaces well and does not effectively consume eggs, it usually needs repeated applications to fully break the life cycle.
Best for: Enclosures with deeper, loose substrate such as bioactive setups, coco fiber, or mulch. It’s excellent for long-term maintenance and prevention in naturalistic enclosures.
2. Cheyletus eruditus (market name: Taurrus)

This is a climbing predator that hunts on many surfaces, including the snake itself, cage furniture, and glass. It targets all life stages of the snake mite, including eggs, making it very effective for active infestations.
Best for: Bare-bottom or simple enclosures, severe infestations, and situations where you want fast, near-total eradication. It can be applied directly into the enclosure and, in some cases, lightly onto the snake (if the animal is stable and it’s safe to do so).
Step-by-Step Protocol: Using Predatory Mites
Follow this workflow to eliminate Ophionyssus natricis safely and effectively.
Phase 1: Preparation (Crucial Safety Step)
Predatory mites are living organisms. Any chemical pesticide, diatomaceous earth, or essential oil residue can kill them instantly. Avoid using these products for at least 2–3 weeks before introducing predators.
1. Remove Chemicals
Make sure there are no residual sprays, powders, or oils in the enclosure or on the snake.
2. Clean the Enclosure
a. Remove and discard all old substrate. This physically removes a large number of eggs and larvae.
b. Wash hides, water bowls, and décor with hot water. Avoid harsh soaps or disinfectants that could leave residues.
c. Replace with fresh, clean substrate. Stratiolaelaps needs loose substrate to burrow, while Cheyletus can work on almost any surface.
Check the Environment
a. Temperature: Keep the enclosure between 59–86°F (15–30°C).
b. Humidity: Maintain relative humidity around 50–70%. Predatory mites dehydrate and die in very dry conditions (below ~40% RH).
Phase 2: Application
You can choose one or both predator species depending on your setup and infestation level.
Option A: Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Substrate Treatment)
This option is ideal for bioactive or naturalistic enclosures and for ongoing mite prevention.
1. Agitate the Container
Gently rotate or shake the shipping container to distribute the mites evenly through the carrier material (often bran or vermiculite).
2. Sprinkle Over the Substrate
Evenly spread the mixture across the entire surface of the substrate.
3. Focus on Hotspots
Pay extra attention to corners, under hides, and high-humidity areas where snake mites tend to lay eggs.
Dosage
Use about 1,000–2,000 predatory mites per standard enclosure. For severe infestations, you can safely double this dose.
Do Not Disturb
Allow the predators to burrow and settle. Avoid heavy misting for the first 24 hours so they can establish themselves.
Option B: Cheyletus eruditus / Taurrus (Total Eradication)
This option is best for active, visible infestations on the snake and in the enclosure.
1. Agitate the Bottle
Gently shake the bottle or bucket for about 20 seconds to mix the mites evenly.
2. Direct Release in the Enclosure
a. Sprinkle the contents directly onto the substrate, hides, and cage furniture.
b. Optional: Fill any provided “mite booster” tubes and attach them to branches or near the snake’s favorite basking spot. This places predators right in the snake’s path.
On the Snake (If Safe)
Some keepers lightly dust the snake itself, but in many cases, treating the environment is enough. The predators will naturally find and climb onto the host.
4. Dosage
One standard bottle (around 25,000 mites) typically treats 1–3 for a curative treatment.
Phase 3: Monitoring and Maintenance
1. Immediate Action
Predatory mites begin hunting as soon as they are released. You should see a noticeable drop in visible snake mites within 48–72 hours.
2. The 10-Day Rule
a. Cheyletus can eliminate up to about 95% of parasites within 10 days.
b. Stratiolaelaps may take 2–3 weeks to reach full effect, especially in complex enclosures.
Re-Application Strategy
a. Because Stratiolaelaps does not eat eggs, re-apply every 7–10 days for at least three cycles. This catches newly hatched larvae before they mature and reproduce.
b. Cheyletus usually needs only one or two applications spaced about two weeks apart to achieve total eradication.
After Treatment
Once the snake mites are gone, the predatory mites will slowly starve and die off within 3–4 weeks. They do not infest homes, bite humans, or harm your pets.
Visual Identification Guide
Being able to tell pests from predators is critical so you don’t panic and kill the “good guys.”
1. Snake Mite – Ophionyssus natricis
Appearance (unfed): Tiny, dark grey or black specks, often mistaken for pepper.
Appearance (fed): Engorged females turn reddish-brown or greyish-white and swell noticeably.
Movement: Fast-moving when disturbed.
Where to Look: Around the eyes, under scales, in skin folds, and floating in the water bowl (they often drown while trying to escape).
2. Predator – Stratiolaelaps scimitus
Color: Light brown, tan, or translucent amber.
Size: Slightly larger than snake mites (about 0.5–0.8 mm).
Shape: Oval and shiny.
Movement: Very quick across the substrate surface but rarely climbs smooth glass or branches.
Visual Tip: They look like tiny, fast-moving grains of sand or light brown dust on the bedding.
3. Predator – Cheyletus eruditus (Taurrus)
Color: Adults are orange to reddish-brown; larvae are white.
Size: Very small (under 1 mm), often barely visible to the naked eye.
Shape: Has a noticeable “waist” or narrowing in the middle and large front palps that look like claws.
Movement: Slower than Stratiolaelaps but excellent climbers.
Visual Tip: Often described as tiny moving orange specks on glass, décor, or the snake.
